Mario Zagallo, the only survive of the Brazil squad that won the 1958 World Cup, passed away at the age of 92.
Ednaldo Rodrigues, the president of the Brazilian soccer confederation, confirmed his death.
Rodrigues called Zagallo “one of the biggest legends” of the sport in a statement released on Saturday.
“We extend our condolences to his family and supporters during this difficult time following the loss of this incredible soccer hero,” Rodrigues stated.
Along with Flamengo and Botafogo, he won five state championships in Rio de Janeiro. Just before the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, he made his debut for Brazil at the age of 26, but he quickly established himself as a key player, earning 37 caps.
As a player, Zagallo participated in a record five World Cup finals with four victories. Later, he coached Brazil.
Additionally, he is the first guy to win the world championship in both management and play.
