After Liverpool FC Women managed to secure a late 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Matt Beard complimented the players’ tremendous spirit.
At Prenton Park, the Reds secured a point at the end of the match when Marie Höbinger scored in the first minute of extra time.
Before the late equalizer made it all square at the final siren, Celin Bizet had earlier scored for the visitors in the 71st minute.
About displaying strong “character” to win a draw…
That game was humorous. Both teams’ performances were affected by the pitch, in my opinion, even though the playing circumstances weren’t ideal.
I thought the entire time we were really comfortable. Martha had a flash of genius there,
but the goal was frustrating since the ball deflected off a leg and spun in.
It was annoying, but we persevered admirably and, in my opinion, scored in the ninetieth minute, so it felt more like a win than a draw.
On the impact of his substitutions…
Lucy Parry, aka Paz, has been training exceptionally hard. Mel is obviously Mel.
I’m glad she’s made her 100th appearance for us, but I felt Leanne Kiernan was a major hassle.
It’s fantastic, we fall short, it happened against Bristol City as well, we adjusted, and it had a significant effect.
As previously said, we have an excellent depth of squad members, allowing us to make changes as needed.
On Hobinger’s late goal…
She has excellent ball handling technique. She should be the one to receive it if you want it to fall to her on the box’s edge.
She did a great job, in my opinion, moving the ball to start the stroke.
On both sides being similar with aims of the top four…
As you can see by looking at the top three, Arsenal has clearly lost today.
For us, this year has always been about doing better than the previous one.
The younger guys that we brought in are learning these skills and how to perform consistently.
We’re disappointed that we didn’t win today, like I said. We could have won, in my opinion.
On Melissa Lawley’s 100th game…
Unfortunately, she didn’t start today. Mel is a fantastic football player, as I mentioned in my programme notes, but she’s also a tremendous character.
She can occasionally be unplayable when she’s feeling it. I’m happy for her.
On Grace Fisk’s performance…
She ought to be on the England squad, in my opinion. Her performances, in my opinion, merit that.
Fisky is just one of those people, but she has been quite flexible for us, having played center defense and full back. She simply goes about her daily business and training behind the radar. We’ve been really fortunate to sign her.
On the late goal being a ‘sweet’ feeling…
Yeah, it was. I just felt the way the game was going it didn’t feel like it would come. But then we had a lot of attacking players on the pitch at the back end.
If you look at it, you’ve got Marie, Ceri, Mel, Sophie and Leanne Kiernan. We know we’ve got players that can score goals.
